The Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, has given strong assurances that the government will move swiftly to address the concerns raised by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), following recent tensions that led to industrial action.
His remarks come in the wake of a crucial engagement between government representatives and leaders of CLOGSAG, which resulted in the suspension of a strike that had threatened to disrupt public sector operations.
The association announced the suspension after what both sides described as productive discussions aimed at finding a lasting solution to the issues at hand.
Speaking to the media after the meeting on Tuesday, March 17, Dr. Pelpuo emphasised the government’s commitment to resolving the matter within a clearly defined timeline.
He indicated that all necessary consultations would be undertaken within a 14-day window agreed upon during the discussions, signaling a sense of urgency and seriousness on the part of authorities.
“We hope that within 14 days, all the areas, all the people that need to be consulted, agencies that need to be consulted, would have been consulted and would have been able to sit down and look at the way forward.
“You do a budget and consider within the financial year everything you are going to do. Now, if something comes within the space before you end the financial year, it means that there is an intrusion into an established approval by Parliament, and so in that respect, you have to now do a lot of consultations.”
The suspension of the strike is expected to bring temporary relief to public sector operations as workers return to their posts on March 24 while negotiations continue.
