Railway Workers Union on Thursday, March 19, picketed the Ministry of Transport in protest over unpaid salaries, accusing authorities of failing to release funds meant to settle their arrears.
The demonstration comes amid growing frustration among staff who say they have gone 13 months without pay despite assurances that resources are available.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, March 19, the Union’s General Secretary, Benjamin Essuman, said the government had already taken steps to raise funds for the payments, but workers have yet to benefit.
According to him, President John Mahama directed the Ministry of Transport to dispose of obsolete railway equipment to generate revenue for salary payments. He noted that the railway system, which is over a century old, had several outdated assets that were no longer in use.
He disclosed that the exercise was completed on December 23, 2025, and generated about GH₵20.6 million—an amount he said could cover up to 10 months of salary arrears.
However, nearly three months after the sale, no payments have been made, prompting the workers to resort to picketing.
“This exercise was completed on December 23, and the ministry has indicated that it realised GH₵20.6 million, which can cover 10 months out of our 30-month arrears.
“We are therefore asking why, from December until now, nothing has been paid. That is why we started picketing at the Ministry of Transport this morning,”he said
