Railway workers protest again over unpaid salaries

The Railway Workers Union has taken to the streets in protest, intensifying pressure on the government over long-standing grievances related to poor conditions of service and unpaid salary arrears.

The demonstration is centered on demands for the settlement of a 14th-month salary backlog and broader concerns about the welfare of railway employees across Ghana.

Members of the union are currently picketing at the forecourt of the Transport Ministry, displaying placards and chanting to express their dissatisfaction.

According to the leadership of the union, the situation has reached a breaking point after months of what they describe as unfulfilled assurances and delays.

Speaking to Citi News during the protest, the union leader levelled accusations against the Transport Minister, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, claiming that he has sidelined the Railway Workers Union despite engaging with other stakeholders within the ministry.

The leader argued that the union’s exclusion from key discussions reflects a broader pattern of neglect, further deepening the frustrations of workers who feel their concerns are not being taken seriously.

“We are embarking on this protest because of the salary issues. It has been back and forth and promise upon promise. We are not happy with what the ministry or the government is doing to the workers.

“One thing is that the salary arrears were 18 months and 10 weeks ago, they paid 4 out of it, and it is now left with almost 14 months. And one thing is that the government and the ministry told us that there is no money again.

“We all sat down and concluded that since there are obsolete items at the railway, and the railway items are more than 110 years old, what has to be done is that the President approve that they auction those items because they can never be used again.”
