The Holy Cross Clinic and Maternity Home in Sambuli in the Saboba District of the Northern Region is appealing for urgent support to upgrade its facility to a polyclinic and improve healthcare delivery for residents.
Speaking on behalf of the facility, the Clinic In-Charge, Reverend Sister Berlin Grace, said the clinic currently serves a catchment population of about 30,000 people across the Sambuli and Kpalba sub-districts, noting that while the clinic continues to provide essential healthcare services, it faces significant challenges that hinder its ability to deliver quality care, particularly to mothers and children.
She explained that ongoing efforts to upgrade the facility require support to fully equip the maternity block and complete an ongoing children’s ward project.
“These improvements will significantly enhance our ability to provide safe, comprehensive and high-quality care, especially for mothers and children in Sambuli and surrounding communities,” she stated.
The Clinic In-Charge also highlighted critical staff shortages at the facility, revealing that it currently operates with only one midwife and an internally generated fund (IGF) midwife managing both maternity and antenatal services.
She added that the facility’s only Physician Assistant is overburdened, often working around the clock to meet the healthcare needs of the community.
Sr. Grace therefore appealed to the Ministry of Health to deploy more nurses, midwives and Physician Assistants to support healthcare delivery in the area.
She also called on stakeholders, development partners and the general public to support the facility’s expansion efforts to ensure improved access to quality healthcare in the community.
Health workers at the facility attribute the staffing challenges to poor network connectivity and bad road conditions, which they say discourage professionals from accepting postings to the community.
Abigail Opoku, Midwife, Sambuli Holy Cross Clinic, is therefore appealing to the government to provide the needed support and introduce incentives to attract and retain staff in remote areas.
