Upper East Regional Minister raises alarm over rising prostitution, drug abuse

The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Atanga Akamugri has expressed concern over the rising incidence of commercial sex activities, commonly referred to as prostitution and substance abuse in Bolgatanga.

The Minister described the trend as a significant moral decadence, which posed a serious threat to the wellbeing and future of the youth.

He has therefore called for intensified efforts by security agencies, religious leaders and the broader community to curb the situation before it escalates further.

The Minister made the call on Friday in Bolgatanga during the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations.

He noted that while the occasion was one of joy and spiritual renewal, it was also important to reflect on emerging social challenges confronting the region.

“Even as we celebrate, we must remain mindful of emerging social challenges within our communities. The rising moral decadence, particularly the growing incidence of commercial sex activity in the regional capital, as well as substance abuse, poses a serious threat to the wellbeing and future of our youth.”

Mr Akamugri stressed the need for a collective response to address the issue, urging residents to support law enforcement agencies in strengthening surveillance and enforcement measures.

He also appealed to religious and traditional leaders to use their influence to promote moral discipline and guide the youth away from negative practices.

The Minister further warned that if left unchecked, the situation could undermine the social fabric of the region and derail development efforts.

Touching on broader security concerns, he reiterated the need to guard against violent extremism and other social vices, calling for sustained vigilance and community cooperation.

Mr Akamugri encouraged the youth to remain focused, disciplined and law-abiding, and to channel their energies into productive ventures that would contribute to the development of the region.

He also urged the public to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and compassion emphasised during Ramadan, and to extend support to the less privileged in society.

Sheikh Yussif Imam Umar, the Upper East Regional Chief Imam, offered prayers for the country and urged the citizens to support efforts to bring development to the vulnerable communities.
