Teachers in the Adentan-Madina-Abokobi enclave are expected to meet the Adentan Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Ella Christine Esinam Nongo, and other stakeholders on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, in a bid to resolve an ongoing industrial standoff triggered by the alleged assault of a colleague.
The meeting comes after members of the teaching fraternity withdrew their services in protest, refusing to return to the classroom as schools reopen.
The aggrieved teachers insist they will only resume duties once those allegedly involved in the assault are arrested and dealt with by the appropriate authorities.
Speaking to Citi News, the Chairman of the Adentan branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Christian Yaw Adinkrah, expressed optimism that today’s engagement will yield a breakthrough.
“We want to teach, but in an environment that we feel is safe for us. We will make our case clear. In the interim, we still maintain and ask our teachers to remain calm. At the end of the meeting with the MCE and the stakeholders, we will communicate to them as to whether we should continue or not.
“The outcome we expect from the meeting is the arrest of the perpetrators. We maintain that the people are in the society, we know them and they know us,” he said.
On April 8, during a mock examination at Bethel Presbyterian JHS, a former student, identified as Aaron Mensah, was allegedly found loitering in a classroom and going through pupils’ bags. He was confronted by the invigilating teacher, Mohammed Abdela, who asked him to leave the premises.
The individual initially refused to comply, insisting he was waiting for a friend. Although he eventually left after repeated demands, he reportedly issued a threat to return—a warning that later materialised as he, together with a group of people with motorbikes, confronted the teacher and assaulted him.
Following the incident, the matter was reported to the police, but no arrests have so far been made. GNAT has, however demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of individuals who assaulted the teacher, warning that its members will refuse to return to classrooms if action is not taken.
The teachers maintain that their decision to stay away from the classroom will remain in force until concrete action is taken to address their security concerns.
