The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition says power generation at the Akosombo Dam is steadily improving, with engineers working to fully restore all remaining units following recent disruptions to the national grid.
Spokesperson and Head of Communications at the Ministry, Richmond Rockson, said current output has reached about 70 percent of Akosombo’s total capacity, significantly improving the outlook for electricity distribution across the country.
Speaking in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Wednesday, April 29, he explained that technical teams are making steady progress in bringing additional generation units back online after the earlier setback caused by a fire incident at the Akosombo substation.
“As we speak we are doing about 70% of the capacity of Akosombo. This has improved significantly the outlook when it comes to the power that we need to distribute to the various homes. The engineers are working tirelessly to bring the fifth one up.
“They’ve assured us that very soon the fifth one should come up. All in all they have told us that by weekend we should have all six and so we have all our fingers crossed. But the good news is that with what we have currently, supply plan looks pretty good,” he said.
His comments come after government announced that the fourth generation unit at Akosombo had been successfully restored, following the earlier return of the third unit as part of ongoing recovery efforts.
The phased restoration of the plant follows the disruption that led to the loss of more than 1,000 megawatts of power to the national grid, resulting in supply instability and intermittent outages.
Government says the continued recovery of the remaining units is expected to further stabilise electricity supply nationwide as engineers work around the clock to fully restore operations at the facility.
