An alumnus of the Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC, Legon), Samuel Victor Addo has called on the government to recognise and strengthen the role of old students as key development partners in advancing Senior High School education in the country.
According to him, while the government plays a central role in funding education, it cannot single-handedly meet all the infrastructural and developmental needs of schools.
He noted that alumni, unlike government, have a personal and emotional attachment to their schools, which places them in a unique position to contribute meaningfully to their growth.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Akro House renovation project at Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, the project originator, Sam Addo, emphasised that alumni remain critical stakeholders in the maintenance and development of their former schools.

“Old students are a critical part of the maintenance and running of schools. Government cannot do it all. We have an emotional stake; we lived here, we studied here, and we created lasting memories here.
“While government is an institutional stakeholder, we are personally invested, and that should drive us to do more for our schools,” he said.

He, however, stressed that encouraging alumni participation should not absolve the government of its responsibility to adequately resource educational institutions.

The Akro House renovation project, which cost GH¢1.8 million and was completed within six months, delivered significant upgrades to the facility.
These include renovated dormitories, a refurbished common room, a newly constructed 28-seater toilet facility, a modern multi-unit shower area, concrete flooring for drying lines, and a pavilion designed as a multi-purpose space for studying, socialising, and hosting visitors.

Describing the transformation, Sam Addo, the project originator, said the initiative had restored the house “from decline to dignity, and from weariness to excellence.”

“This is more than a renovation; it is a pace-setting example. Let this mark the beginning of a new era where every part of the school reflects the excellence we stand for,” he added.
