The Central Regional Disaster Management Committee has declared Baifikrom and its surrounding communities safe following a chlorine gas leak at the Baifikrom Water Treatment Plant.
The incident initially raised concerns about possible exposure and health risks to residents. However, officials say a swift response helped to neutralise the gas and prevent harm.
Speaking to Citi News, the Central Regional Environmental Health Officer, William Freeman Goku, confirmed that experts successfully contained the situation.
According to him, no hazard has been recorded so far regarding the health and safety of residents. He, however, indicated that surveillance measures will be put in place to monitor any potential long-term effects.
The Central Regional Fire Command has also reported that there has been no environmental impact and has since concluded its operations at the site.
Central Regional Fire Officer, ACFOII Mary Atiga Mensah, said the situation is fully under control.
“The situation is under total control. Residents have no cause for alarm. Any significant chlorine exposure would show effects within 30 minutes to an hour, such as changes to plant leaves. Since the leaves remain green, there’s no reason for concern,” she said.
