The People’s Forum, has petitioned the government, calling for the suspension and removal of several fuel-related levies amid rising fuel prices.
The group argues that recent increases in fuel prices have significantly worsened the cost of living, with ripple effects on transportation, food prices, rent, and other basic necessities.
According to the Forum, many Ghanaians—particularly workers owed months of unpaid salaries, traders, and commercial drivers—are struggling to cope with the escalating costs.
In a petition submitted to the Finance Minister on April 7, 2026, the group outlined a number of demands, insisting that government policy decisions are at the core of the current situation and can be reversed.
Key among their demands is the immediate suspension of the Price Stabilisation Levy, which they say was promised under the NDC’s 2024 Manifesto as a relief measure during periods of economic difficulty.
The group contends that despite prevailing conditions, the levy remains in force.
The Forum also called for the abolition of the Borla Tax, previously criticised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) while in opposition as “exploitative and anti-poor.”
According to the group, the tax continues to be collected under a different name.
Additionally, the group is demanding the removal of a newly introduced GH¢1.00 per litre levy on fuel, which it describes as lacking a clear and legitimate basis. Citing data from the Energy Commission, the Forum argues that the majority of electricity generation costs are already covered through existing tariffs, making the new levy an unnecessary burden on consumers.
The People’s Forum further maintains that government has the fiscal capacity to ease the burden on citizens, pointing to increased revenues from Ghana’s oil exports due to high global crude prices. They argue that this windfall should be used to offset any revenue shortfalls rather than introducing or maintaining additional levies.
The group says the petition marks the beginning of sustained civic engagement and is urging Ghanaians to speak out on the issue.
