The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced plans to replace a batch of defective 2026 vehicle number plates after quality checks revealed durability issues.
The authority said routine inspections identified that some embossed number plates did not meet required standards, leading to fading of printed characters.
In a statement issued on Monday, April 27, the DVLA said the affected batch had been withdrawn from circulation immediately after the defect was detected, although some had already been issued to vehicle owners.
“All affected vehicle owners are invited to visit any DVLA office nationwide for a free replacement,” the statement said.
The Authority apologised for the inconvenience caused and accepted responsibility for the oversight, assuring the public that steps were being taken to prevent a recurrence.
It added that quality assurance processes were being strengthened to ensure the delivery of safe, reliable and high-quality vehicle registration services.
