The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has launched a full-scale investigation into a fire outbreak at its Akosombo Substation in the Eastern Region.

The incident disrupted electricity supply to several parts of the country.

The fire, which broke out on Thursday, April 23, is reported to have affected key components within the substation, raising concerns about the stability of power transmission in the affected areas.

While the exact cause of the blaze remains unknown, GRIDCo has indicated that preliminary assessments are underway to determine the origin of the incident and the extent of the damage caused.

In an official statement, the company acknowledged the impact of the outage on households, businesses, and essential services, noting that the disruption has led to intermittent power supply in some regions.

GRIDCo emphasised that such incidents, although rare, require immediate and coordinated technical intervention to prevent further complications within the national grid.

The Akosombo Substation plays a critical role in Ghana’s power transmission network, serving as a major hub for distributing electricity from key generation sources to various parts of the country.

GRIDCo assured the public that its engineers and technical teams have been deployed to the site and are working around the clock to stabilise the system.

According to the company, efforts are currently focused on isolating the affected components, restoring system balance, and ensuring that power is gradually reinstated to impacted areas.

The company further reiterated its commitment to maintaining a reliable and resilient power transmission network, adding that safety protocols are being strictly observed throughout the restoration process.

GRIDCo also noted that updates will be provided as investigations progress and as power supply is fully restored.
