The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has inaugurated a committee to oversee the establishment of new public universities across the country.
The committee, which is expected to report to the Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, will advise the government on its plans to expand access to tertiary education through the creation of additional universities.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, April 15, Mr Iddrisu said the committee’s report will be critical in shaping the future of public university education in the country.
“Higher education remains a critical public good and a critical public need because there are many young people in Ghana who are still having difficulty accessing quality higher education across the country.
“At the request of the Vice President, the President requested that we put this committee together to advise the government on the establishment of new public universities in Ghana,” he said
The Chairperson of the committee and former Minister of Education Dr. Christina Amoako-Nuama, described the move as timely, noting that it will enhance access to higher education nationwide.
“The mandate entrusted to this committee, which is to expand access to higher education through the establishment of new public universities, the completion of ongoing projects, and the strategic expansion of existing tertiary institutions, is both ambitious and timely”, she said
