President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish five maize processing plants across the country as part of efforts to reduce post-harvest losses and strengthen Ghana’s agricultural value chain.
Speaking during his Resetting Ghana tour in the Northern Region on Saturday, April 18, President John Dramani Mahama indicated that the new factories will serve as a key intervention to absorb excess maize produced by farmers, particularly during peak harvest seasons when prices typically fall due to oversupply.
He explained that the plants will help stabilise the market by purchasing surplus produce and storing or processing it for later use.
“The government is planning to establish five maize processing plants. One solution is to buy the excess produce and sell it later during the lean season. The other solution is to buy it and process it,” he said.
He added that the facilities will not only serve the local market but will also target export opportunities.
“The plants will buy all the corn that is available from farmers and process it both for local consumption and for export. There’s an export market for corn flour, and we have excess corn, so we can process it and export it to bring dollars back to Ghana,” he added.
