New VIP fares take effect today despite govt intervention

Management of VIP Jeoun Transport has confirmed that its planned increase in transport fares takes effect on Wednesday, April 8, despite an intervention from President John Dramani Mahama, who called for an emergency Cabinet meeting to deliberate on the recent surge in petroleum prices.

The decision by the transport operator signals a firm stance by one of Ghana’s leading intercity bus service providers, even as the government moves to address the broader economic pressures affecting commuters and transport operators alike.

The fare adjustment, according to VIP Jeoun, will apply to both its standard buses and executive coach services, impacting passengers traveling on key routes from Accra to various destinations across the country.

The development comes at a time when Ghanaians are already grappling with rising living costs, with fuel prices remaining a major driver of transport fares and general inflation.

Industry players have repeatedly warned that sustained increases in operational costs—particularly fuel, spare parts, and maintenance—have made it increasingly difficult to maintain existing fare levels.

Speaking to journalists following a meeting with officials at the Ministry of Transport, Ghana, on Tuesday, April 7, General Manager of VIP Jeoun Transport, Adakabre Frimpong Manso, defended the company’s decision, noting that the fare adjustment had been delayed for a considerable period despite mounting financial pressures.

“What we have already announced our stance, but then we will communicate to the directors what the Transport Minister has said. These fares were supposed to kick off in March 2025, and then at the instance of the Transport Minister, we stood them down, we suspended those prices.

“So it has been there for one year, and we should not forget the tragedy of the price increase of VIP, the fares were last increased in April 2024. What is in Ghana that is GH₵10 two years ago that remains GH₵10 two years later in real terms?”
