The Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has called on district assemblies in the Upper West Region to revive tomato production in Sankana, to boost local supply and reduce reliance on imports.
She noted that the area was once a major hub for tomato farming and still has the potential to regain that status.
The call forms part of government’s efforts to strengthen local production, particularly following recent attacks on Ghanaian tomato farmers in Burkina Faso which led to the death of eight.
Speaking at the Sankana Festival, the Vice President urged local authorities to work closely with communities to revitalize tomato cultivation across the Upper West Region.
“Agriculture as we know is also very important to our national development agenda. Sankana is well positioned to benefit from ongoing efforts to strengthen food production and agro-processing,” she stressed.
She also called for peace among residents, to create an enabling environment for development.
“Every aspect of national development rests on peace. Where stability holds, businesses can grow, farmers can invest in their land and children can thrive,” she said.
Highlighting ongoing infrastructure projects, she said government remains committed to improving road networks in the northern belt under the Big Push programme.
“I am happy to note that the road from Wa through Tumu to Navrongo is currently under construction. Furthermore, work has started on the Wa to Sawla road,” she said.
