The Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kamal-Deen Abdulai, has called for a broader African diplomatic response to recurring xenophobic incidents targeting Africans in South Africa and other countries.
His comments come amid renewed concerns over attacks on foreign nationals in South Africa, including Ghanaians, which have triggered diplomatic engagements between Accra and Pretoria.
Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has already warned that the government will not relent in its responsibility to protect citizens abroad, stressing that every Ghanaian, regardless of location, must feel secure under state protection.
He has described recent incidents as unacceptable and reaffirmed that the Foreign Affairs Ministry will continue to engage South African authorities to ensure the safety and dignity of Ghanaians.
Speaking on Citi FM’s The Big Issue on Saturday, April 25, Kamal-Deen Abdulai said the issue should not be treated as a domestic concern of one country alone, but addressed collectively through regional and continental platforms to ensure lasting solutions.
“It is important that we don’t just discuss it and end it there as a people. We should find a way of getting our foreign affairs minister to invite other countries that have been victims of some of these things to come together, discuss it get to the AU table, discuss it with South African bodies, and other countries where this happening so we can solve this once and for all,” he said.
