The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in the Upper West Region has intercepted a truck carrying suspected illicit drugs and explosives at the Babile Inland Checkpoint in a major intelligence-led operation.
According to an official statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Insp. Ibn Yussif Duranah Abdul-Seidu, the interception occurred on Monday, March 23, 2026, following what authorities described as a “well-calculated” intelligence tip-off.
Immigration officers on duty stopped a Hyundai truck with registration number AC-1426-22, which was en route from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to Hamile in the Upper West Region.

A subsequent joint inspection conducted on March 26, 2026, involving the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana Police Service, the Narcotics Control Commission, and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), uncovered a significant cache of concealed contraband.
The items retrieved included 20 detonating devices, multiple sacks of dynamite, and large quantities of tramadol branded as Royal Tramadol Kings and Royal Tramal King, all carefully hidden beneath non-contraband goods in an apparent attempt to evade detection.
Authorities indicated that the method of concealment was designed to outsmart security personnel, but the vigilance and professionalism of officers at the checkpoint thwarted the attempt. The statement further emphasised that officers resisted any form of inducement and remained committed to upholding the law.
A full-scale investigation has since been launched to identify and apprehend all individuals connected to the operation.
The GIS also called on residents of the Upper West Region to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely information to support ongoing efforts to combat crime. The Service reiterated its commitment to proactive community engagement and maintaining strong collaboration with the public.
Officials warned that any attempt to obstruct security operations would be met with firm action, stressing that there would be no compromise in the enforcement of the law.
