The Contractor working on the Accra-Tema Motorway expansion project has dismissed claims that work on the road has stalled.

According to the Chief Resident Engineer, Ing. Kwabena Bempong, substantial portions of the project have already been completed.

His comments follow complaints from several motorists who alleged that work on the project had slowed down or come to a standstill.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News on Wednesday, May 20, Ing. Bempong stated that 46 per cent of the project has been completed so far.

“Work has not stalled on the project. You might have seen that when we started about a year ago, we were doing a lot of earthworks. And of course, during earthworks, you see a lot of trucks moving unsuitable material, bringing in rock, bringing in filling material.

He added, “But as of today [May 20], we have probably done about 95% of the earthworks, and we will be starting the pavement works very soon. We’ve also been working on the concrete works. And again, we have about 20 culverts, box culverts—huge ones—and about three bridges.

“We have done quite a lot so far, and I believe as you go along the road, you’ll find out that where we started on the urban highway and left the middle portion, which is the expressway, we’ve now joined the two. By the end of April, we’ve done about 44%. So, give and take, we should be around 46% now.”

Meanwhile, some motorists and passengers who use the road have urged the contractors to expedite work on the project.

“We want the government to expedite the project. I have had to replace several tyres because of the poor nature of the road,” a driver said.

Another driver appealed to the authorities to speed up work on the project.

“The project is taking too long, and it is a major concern for us. We are therefore appealing to the authorities to take action,” a passenger also said.
