About 12 people have been confirmed dead and two others in critical condition after a commercial minibus collided head-on with a trailer at Akomadan in the Offinso North District in the Ashanti Region.
The crash occurred Tuesday afternoon in front of the Offinso North District Assembly.
The minibus was was said to be traveling from Kumasi to Wenchi for the Eid celebration, while the trailer was heading from Techiman towards Kumasi.
Confirming the incident to Citi News, Akomadan District Police Commander, DSP Paul Boabeng Donkor, said the driver of the commercial vehicle attempted to overtake another vehicle but veered into the path of the oncoming trailer, causing the accident.
Medical Superintendent at the Nkenkaasu Government Hospital, Dr. Samuel Freeman Mensah, said 11 passengers were pronounced dead on arrival at the facility.
One other victim died while being transported to Techiman for further treatment in a referral case.
He added that two survivors are in stable condition and receiving treatment.
Dr. Mensah said families have begun arriving to identify their relatives. He appealed to the public, especially those with family members who were traveling to Wenchi for Eid, to visit the hospital.
The bodies have been deposited at the Nkenkaasu Government Hospital morgue for preservation and identification.
Police have towed the damaged vehicles to ease traffic and have launched investigations into the cause of the crash.
The incident has renewed concerns over road safety and reckless overtaking on the stretch.
