The Black Maidens produced a dominant display at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday May 23 , thrashing Liberia 6–0 in the first leg of their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifying tie.
Ghana were in control from the outset, combining sharp attacking play, disciplined defending and high pressing to seize a commanding advantage ahead of the return fixture.
Coach Joe Nana Adarkwa’s side had two goals disallowed for offside within the opening 25 minutes but eventually broke the deadlock in the 31st minute. Jessica Appiah delivered a fine run down the left before setting up Daniella Abass, who finished from close range to open the scoring.
Despite creating several chances, Ghana went into the break with a slender 1–0 lead after failing to convert further opportunities.
After the restart, skipper Seidatu Wahab doubled the advantage from the penalty spot after a handball incident inside the box was punished by the referee.
The hosts added a third shortly after when Linda Achiaa drove forward from defence, beat the goalkeeper and calmly slotted home.
Substitute Priscilla Mensah then played a key role, setting up Jessica Appiah for Ghana’s fourth before Mensah also got her name on the scoresheet to make it 5–0.
Mavis Yeboah completed the rout late in the game, capitalising on a high defensive line from Liberia to seal a comprehensive 6–0 victory for the Black Maidens.
The result follows Ghana’s earlier success against Togo in the opening round of qualifiers, placing them in a strong position ahead of the second leg scheduled for next weekend in Liberia.
Should they advance, Ghana will face either Cameroon or Senegal in the final round of the qualifiers.
