The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Ghana, Rune Skinnebach, has reaffirmed the bloc’s readiness to strengthen its partnership with the Government of Ghana in the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

He noted that although the EU is already involved in several collaborative projects with Ghana in areas such as development cooperation, security, and defence, it remains open to expanding its support, particularly in addressing illegal mining activities.

Ambassador Skinnebach made the remarks after touring some mining sites in Kyebi in the Eastern Region, where he witnessed firsthand the impact of illegal mining.

He stressed the need for increased efforts to promote responsible mining practices and strengthen enforcement mechanisms.

“We are very willing to collaborate with Ghana on the galamsey issue. We are already involved in efforts to combat illegal mining through a number of projects, and we are ready to do even more, but always in partnership with the government” he said.
