The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that the temporary control room of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) is expected to be completed by the end of September 2026.

The announcement follows a fire outbreak at the GRIDCo substation on April 23, 2026, which disrupted power supply and caused intermittent outages across parts of the country.

The fire affected the control room at the Akosombo Switchyard, forcing the shutdown of all six generation units at the dam and leading to the loss of more than 1,000 megawatts of power to the national grid.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, May 20, after inspecting ongoing emergency restoration works at the switchyard, Mr Jinapor said the government was also engaging stakeholders in the power sector on plans to construct a modern permanent control room.

According to him, the permanent facility is intended to strengthen the resilience and reliability of Ghana’s power transmission infrastructure.

Mr Jinapor said he received a comprehensive briefing from GRIDCo officials led by Ing. Frank Otchere on emergency restoration measures being undertaken following the incident.

The briefing covered progress on the temporary control room as well as the installation of enhanced fire protection systems to safeguard both interim and permanent facilities.

“The Temporary Control Room, which will be housed with modern control systems, is expected to be completed by the end of September 2026. Government is also engaging power sector stakeholders on the construction of an ultra-modern permanent Control Room to strengthen the resilience and reliability of Ghana’s power transmission infrastructure,” the Minister said.

He also commended GRIDCo, the Volta River Authority and all technical teams involved in the restoration efforts for their commitment and dedication.
