The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has assured that the livestock trading activity near the Kanda National Mosque will be cleared by Saturday, May 30, following concerns raised by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) over its impact on sanitation and urban order in the capital.

According to her, the trading activity emerged as a seasonal response to increased demand for livestock during the Eid al-Adha period, but authorities moved in after concerns were raised about congestion, sanitation challenges and disruption to urban management in the area.

Speaking during an engagement with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and the media, the Minister explained that discussions were held with stakeholders to allow a short grace period for traders to conclude activities before the area is cleared.

She emphasised that the arrangement was temporary and that steps are being taken to restore order and prevent a recurrence in future festive seasons.

“Honestly speaking we gave them up till Friday so hopefully we can assure you that by Saturday, the place will be cleared. We met the opinion leaders and they pleaded with us. We have also directed the MCE that next time, they should find a nice place for them to display their livestock.

“So we are on course. Myself and the team will visit the place tomorrow to see if they will honour their pledge. We will make sure that the place comes back to its normal state,” she said.
