Chairman of the Korle Bu branch of the Allied Health Professionals, Edward Ayem, says ongoing negotiations between health workers and the Ministry of Health over the leadership of laboratory services at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital have made significant progress, with parties agreeing to pause any planned action for one week.
Speaking in an interview on the Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, May 5, Ayem explained that discussions are still ongoing at the ministry level, but some consensus has already been reached on the way forward.
“As for engagements, there have been many. As we speak now, we are just concluding with the chief director of the ministry. We are still here at the Ministry of Health and some conclusions have been arrived at,” he said.
He added that interim measures are being put in place ahead of a final resolution expected within a week.
“We are to put some measures in place and come back in a week’s time to have a proper resolution of the matters,” he noted.
Ayem further disclosed that all parties have agreed to suspend any industrial action or related steps during the one-week period to allow for further consultations.
“For the one week, there is going to be a hold on any action by any of the parties while there will be some consultations in the background,” he said.
He added that the Chief Director of the Ministry of Health will reconvene stakeholders after the consultations to finalise the issue.
“The Chief Director will invite us back in a week’s time to bring some finality to the issue,” he stated.
The development comes amid tensions at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital over the leadership of its laboratory services, which has triggered protests from allied health professionals and a strike notice from the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union.
The union has already announced plans for nationwide industrial action effective May 12, 2026, if the matter is not resolved, citing alleged breaches of earlier agreements reached under the Ministry of Health’s supervision.
However, the latest engagement suggests a temporary truce as stakeholders work toward a negotiated settlement.
