Residents of Papase No. 1 in the Awutu Senya District of the Central Region have raised concerns over worsening environmental conditions caused by two large poultry farms in the area, warning that the situation is affecting their health and daily living.
The farms, located along the Bawjiase highway and at Policeman Junction, have operated in the community for several years.
However, residents say rapid residential growth around the facilities has turned what was once a farming area into a densely populated neighbourhood, making the operations increasingly incompatible with local living conditions.

Community members complain that persistent foul odours and wastewater runoff from the farms have created an unhealthy environment, particularly during rainfall.
“We are unable to open our windows because of the foul smell from the farms. When it rains too the rain water from the farms create an unpleasant environment,” resident Habada Emelia told Channel One News.
Some residents say the environmental conditions are now posing direct health risks, especially for children with respiratory conditions.

“My child keeps having asthma attacks due to the poor quality of the air,” a parent of an asthmatic child said.
According to the Vice Chairman of the Papase No.1 Landlords and Residents Association, Michael Habada, repeated efforts to engage the farm owners on adopting safer and more environmentally friendly practices have not yielded results.
“There’s a lack of cooperation between us and the owner. We’ve consistently asked for him to put in place best practices but he doesn’t listen to us. There was even a time he drove us out of the premises when we sought to engage him,” he stated.

The owner of the poultry farm at Policeman Junction declined to comment when contacted by Channel One News. Residents say although the Awutu Senya District Assembly is aware of the situation, they are yet to see any concrete action to address the growing environmental and health concerns.
They have appealed for urgent regulatory intervention to ensure proper environmental standards are enforced and to safeguard the wellbeing of the community.
