The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced plans by the Ministry to fund the training of heavy equipment operators to help address the growing shortage of skilled personnel in the road construction sector.
According to the Minister, the initiative is aimed at providing contractors with a stable pool of trained operators to improve consistency and efficiency on project sites across the country.
Speaking to the press during the nationwide road inspection tour on Monday, May 11, 2026, the Minister explained that the training programme is expected to last about two months, although some contractors believe trainees could acquire the necessary skills within a month.
“A few of the contractors are complaining that they do not get enough skilled labour to work. This is positive because it becomes an opportunity to create work for people.
“So, we have directed the ministry to work with the agencies to immediately advertise the specifics that are not available and the crash course that they are training. We will fund the training ourselves,” he said.
The minister continued: “Within two months, they will be able to get the skills the contractors need to get them to work”.
He indicated that the programme will focus on training operators for heavy construction equipment such as rollers, excavators, and other machinery commonly used in road construction.
The Minister noted that contractors frequently struggle to retain skilled operators because trained workers often leave projects after receiving better offers elsewhere.
According to him, the long-term solution is to increase the number of trained operators available in the country rather than allowing contractors to compete aggressively over a limited workforce.
