Workers of the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL) have protested against the Ghana Railway Development Authority’s (GRDA) operation of passenger rail services in Tema and Takoradi, insisting that the responsibility falls under the core mandate of GRCL.
According to them, the mandate falls under GRCL and not GRDA, which they say is only mandated to regulate and develop the sector.
Speaking at a press conference in Takoradi on Wednesday, May 13, the workers, clad in red armbands to express their displeasure, said the GRDA’s operation of the shuttle railway services is outside its mandate.
They further alleged that the GRDA has gone ahead to engage only 40 GRCL workers to operate the services, a situation they are calling on the government to address.

“They have taken 40 workers from the GRCL. They are regulators and not operators. If they are coming to operate the shuttle service line, then it means they are going against what the Act stipulates.
“Our leaders have not informed us about anything. We’re pleading with the government to come clean on this,” They said.
