A special intelligence-led operation by the Ghana Police Service has led to the dismantling of a suspected armed robbery syndicate linked to a series of violent attacks in the Upper East Region.
The operation, carried out on Tuesday, April 29, 2026, resulted in the arrest of four suspects at Zuarungu, identified as Awudu Kasim, Malik Baako, Mohammed Amidu, and Wadud Abdul.
According to police, the suspects were apprehended at their hideout following weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering on the gang’s activities across parts of the region.
A search conducted at the scene led to the recovery of a G3 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition. The weapon was reportedly concealed in the storage compartment of a motorbike allegedly stolen from a victim by one of the suspects, Samsudeen Mohammed, and another accomplice known only as “DJ”, who is currently on the run.
Police also retrieved seven additional motorbikes believed to have been stolen in various robbery incidents. Investigations revealed that the suspects admitted involvement in several armed robberies in the region.

These include an attack on February 4, 2026, along the Zuarungu–Kongo road, during which a bus driver, Ussif Abdul Razak, sustained gunshot injuries and lost three fingers. Another victim, cargo truck driver Mohammed Ibrahim, was also attacked on the same stretch.
The suspects further admitted to a robbery on March 28, 2026, at the Kejetia mining site in Gbane, where miner Atani Mark was robbed of cash and gold, alongside other incidents within the area.
During the operation, two individuals identified as Samsudeen Mohammed and Seidu Safianu sustained gunshot wounds. They were later confirmed dead, and their bodies have been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The four arrested suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other accomplices, including the fugitive known as “DJ”.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that all persons linked to the robbery syndicate will be apprehended and made to face the full rigours of the law.
