The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has confirmed that three people have died following the collapse of a four-storey building at Avenor in North Kaneshie.
Speaking to Citi News, Mr. Allotey said a total of four people were involved in the incident. He noted that three have been confirmed dead, while one person survived the collapse.
“So far, we thank God. We’ve been able to extract four people. Three are dead, and one is alive. There are two males and one female among the deceased,” he said.
Mr. Allotey also disclosed that the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is awaiting court approval before demolishing an adjoining structure linked to the collapsed building.
He explained that although emergency clearance works are ongoing at the site, legal authorization is required before the remaining structure can be pulled down.
He further revealed that engineers have been deployed to inspect other structurally weak buildings across the capital. According to him, any building found to be unsafe will be demolished to prevent further tragedies.
“The other structures need approval and proper assessment. We are going around to test and examine buildings to know more details. Any structure we find to be weak will be brought down before something bad happens,” he added.
The three-storey building collapsed on Sunday, June 7, prompting a large-scale emergency response involving personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces, and other agencies.
