One person has been confirmed dead following the collapse of a building at Avenor in North Kaneshie in the Greater Accra Region, where emergency teams are still working to rescue others believed to be trapped under the debris.

The Accra Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, confirmed the death in an interview with Citi News’ Jude Duncan at the scene on Sunday, June 7.

He added that efforts were still underway to evacuate additional persons who may still be trapped beneath the rubble as rescue operations continue.

The incident occurred earlier in the day opposite the Ashfoam showroom and adjacent to Melcom Plus, where a three-storey structure still under construction, believed to be a residential building with shops on the ground floor, collapsed.

Emergency responders, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), are leading the search and rescue operation with support from other security agencies.

Fire officers say they are still working to reach sections of the collapsed structure where more victims are suspected to be trapped, with heavy-duty equipment being deployed to aid the operation.

Authorities have urged the public to stay away from the area to allow rescue teams to work efficiently as efforts continue to locate and rescue any remaining survivors.
