The Christian Council of Ghana says it will formally write to the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, to request a copy of the amended Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025(anti-LGBTQ+ Bill) for detailed legal review.
According to the Council, it played a role in the initial stages of the bill’s formulation and therefore considers it necessary to examine any new exemptions introduced before taking an official position.
Speaking at the launch of the Voice of the Christian Council of Ghana on Friday, June 5, Chairman of the Ecumenical Convention Planning Committee, Samuel Koku Anyidoho, said the Council would rely on legal advice before commenting on the amended provisions.
He stressed that the group would refrain from further public commentary until it has fully reviewed the text.
“We cannot speak in a vacuum. We have been advised, and so the Christian Council will do the proper thing by writing officially to the Clerk of Parliament for a copy of the Bill that has been passed. Whatever is happening in Parliament, we leave that for the MPs; the Christian Council is not part of it. The Christian Council will come out with a very refined and considered opinion,” he said.
His remarks follow Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin’s directive for Parliament to revisit the already passed Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, after consultations aimed at building broader consensus around the legislation.
On Tuesday, June 2, the Speaker called for further engagement between the Majority and Minority leadership, citing concerns about the legislative process that led to the bill’s passage.
Mr Bagbin said he was surprised the bill was fully passed on Friday, May 29, noting that he had expected Parliament to proceed only to the Consideration Stage before its approval.
He stressed that, given the public interest in the legislation, wider consultation and consensus-building were necessary before final progression.
