‘Clean Up Accra’ campaign clears drains in Amasaman, Tema and Ashaiman

The Clean Up Accra initiative has extended its desilting operations to communities in Tema, Ashaiman and Amasaman as efforts intensify to tackle perennial flooding and improve sanitation across the Greater Accra Region.

The exercise, spearheaded by Zoomlion Ghana Limited in partnership with Channel One TV and the Ghana Police Service, saw teams clear silt and debris from drains at BBC in Community 2 within the Halcrow Electoral Area in Tema, Ashaiman New Town in the Nii Doku Electoral Area, and parts of Amasaman in the Ga West Municipality.

The intervention forms part of a broader campaign aimed at restoring the free flow of water through major drainage channels, reducing the incidence of flooding and promoting cleaner communities.

Speaking during the exercise in Amasaman, the Ga West Municipal Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Emmanuel Adjei Tabi, underscored the need for local authorities to strictly enforce sanitation regulations to discourage indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

“The Assembly must constantly monitor the stretch so that those who are littering will be punished,” he said.

Some traders operating within the municipality also appealed to authorities to provide adequate waste bins at strategic locations, arguing that improved access to disposal facilities would help minimise littering and support efforts to maintain clean surroundings.

The Clean Up Accra initiative continues to undertake desilting, waste clearance and sanitation activities in selected communities as part of efforts to build resilience against flooding and improve environmental conditions in the capital.
