A Howo gas tanker overturned on the dual carriageway near the Tema Technical Institute in the early hours of Friday, June 19 after the driver reportedly attempted to manoeuvre around a pothole while heading towards the Motorway Roundabout.

Emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) have been at the scene since 1:52 a.m., managing the incident and implementing safety measures.

The truck head of the tanker, bearing registration number 4615-T1-03, has been decoupled from the tanker and transported to a police station as part of ongoing response efforts.

Authorities said there was no visible gas leakage from the tanker. However, residents and businesses in the area have been advised to avoid activities that could generate heat or sparks as a precautionary measure.

Firefighters have maintained a presence at the scene and are continuously cooling the tanker while awaiting the arrival of a Bulk Road Vehicle (BRV) to transfer the gas from the overturned vehicle safely.

The incident has caused traffic disruptions along the stretch, with diversions put in place to manage congestion and ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians.

Emergency responders have urged the public to cooperate with traffic management measures and exercise patience as efforts continue to secure the scene and clear the roadway.

No injuries or fatalities had been reported at the time of filing this report.
