Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), Akwasi Opong-Fosu, has disclosed that he is engaging key stakeholders across the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as he weighs a possible bid for a leadership position ahead of the party’s National Congress scheduled for December 19, 2026.

The NDC is expected to hold its National Congress on December 19, 2026, to elect a new National Executive Committee, following regional elections in November to choose regional executives.

According to Mr. Opong-Fosu, he has spent the past two months engaging stakeholders on how to reposition the party, reconnect with its grassroots, restore confidence in its leadership, and renew hope among members and supporters.

He stressed the need for leadership grounded in integrity, credibility, and inclusiveness, saying any effort to reset the party must be anchored on its core values and principles, as well as a renewed approach to leadership and national development.

Opong-Fosu has more than four decades of public service experience. He served as District Secretary and District Chief Executive from 1982 to 2000, Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development from 2000 to 2001, and later as Minister for Local Government and Rural Development under President John Mahama.

He also served as Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and represented Amenfi East in Parliament from 2013 to 2017. He has also held several international leadership positions, including President of the Africa Union of Local Authorities and Chairman of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Local Government Platform.

Currently, he serves as Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) and leads policy and development organisations, including Africa Growth Solutions and the Africa Global Emergence Center.

While expressing appreciation for the confidence shown in him, Opong-Fosu said he will continue consultations with key stakeholders before making a final decision. He said a formal announcement will be made after the consultations are completed.
