Some Members of Parliament (MPs) have called on the government to consider stricter regulations on social media platforms to prevent children from accessing explicit and inappropriate content online.

The calls follow a disclosure by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, that government is considering a policy requiring individuals to present a National Identity Card or Driver’s Licence before accessing pornography websites.

The proposal is aimed at preventing minors from viewing adult content on the internet.

Speaking to Citi News, some lawmakers welcomed the initiative and stressed the need for broader measures to enhance online child protection.

“In the IT world, anything is possible and he is the Minister for Communication, he knows what he is talking about. Even WhatsApp, you can’t use it in some countries. There are always ways to control various platforms. Everything that has a lock has key. They should do it to make the internet safe for our children,” Lambussie MP, Prof. Titus Beyuo noted.

“I support it because without that restriction, some of our children will go astray as to what content that they are not supposed to have access to,” Asante Akim South MP, Kwaku Asante-Boateng said.

“I support that call that the Ministry of Communication must go, to save our children early enough, if not we will get nowhere,” Kintampo MP, Joseph Kumah stated.
