Two people have lost their lives while four others sustained injuries following a head-on collision between a tipper truck and a Nigerian passenger bus at Abease on the Elubo-Takoradi Highway.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), in a statement on Friday, June 26, said the accident involved a Sinotruck (Howo) tipper truck with registration number GS 3789-24 and a Nigerian passenger bus bearing registration number AAA 449 YN (Lagos).

According to the GNFS, a distress call was received at 11:53 am, prompting the immediate dispatch of a rescue team from the Elubo Fire Station.

A rescue appliance, DPT 465, with a crew of five led by Assistant Divisional Officer II Clement Arthur and accompanied by Assistant Divisional Officer I Issifu Dauda Kaku, arrived at the accident scene at 11:59 am.

Upon arrival, firefighters found five occupants of the passenger bus and one occupant of the tipper truck trapped in the wreckage.

The GNFS said members of the public had already managed to rescue three of the victims before the fire crew reached the scene.

Firefighters immediately launched rescue operations to extricate the remaining trapped occupants and provided emergency assistance before transporting four injured victims to the Elubo Government Hospital for treatment.

Unfortunately, the driver of the Nigerian passenger bus was pronounced dead at the scene, while the mate of the tipper truck later died at the hospital while receiving medical attention.

The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and further investigations.

Preliminary investigations by the Ghana National Fire Service indicate that the crash occurred after the driver of the passenger bus allegedly swerved to avoid a pothole on the highway, causing the vehicle to veer into the lane of the oncoming tipper truck, resulting in the head-on collision.
