The Western Regional Branch of Metro Mass Transit (MMT) Limited has taken delivery of 11 new buses to boost its transport operations.
The 29-seater buses form part of 100 buses procured by the government to strengthen both intra-city and inter-city transport systems across the country.
The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, who handed over the buses to MMT management in Takoradi, said the move forms part of the government’s broader agenda to reset Ghana’s transport system and bring relief to commuters on urban and rural routes.
“The arrival of these buses marks a defining moment for us because we have been fortunate to receive 11 out of the 100 procured. We can only be grateful to the President for this great initiative,” he said.
He urged MMT management to put in place proper maintenance mechanisms to ensure the longevity of the buses.
Mr Nelson also encouraged drivers and conductors to strictly observe safety rules and regulations to reduce road crashes.
The Western Regional Manager of MMT Limited, Albert Asarhin, expressed gratitude to the government for procuring additional buses to augment the existing fleet and improve operations.
“Previously, our buses were only eight, so we stopped operations on certain routes. But with these additions, we will revive those routes and serve our passengers better,” he said.
He added that the new buses would ply various inter-city routes, including Takoradi to Accra, Tarkwa, Elubo, Kumasi, Obuasi, Dunkwa, Sandema, and other communities within the Western Region.
