Why the NPP needs Kennedy Agyapong to help Bawumia win in 2028 – Isaac Offei writes

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made its choice. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will lead the party into the 2028 general elections. The focus should no longer be on internal competition but on unity. If the NPP is to return to power, one man whose role cannot be overlooked is Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

Politics is not won by a presidential candidate alone. Elections are won through teamwork, unity, and the ability to inspire every section of the party’s support base. This is where Kennedy Agyapong becomes indispensable.

For years, Kennedy Agyapong has built a reputation as one of Ghana’s most fearless politicians. He is known for saying things as they are, regardless of who is in power. Even when the NPP formed government, he did not hesitate to criticise policies or decisions he believed were not in the interest of Ghanaians. That consistency has earned him respect from many supporters and even from some who do not belong to the NPP.

His recent comments on the Afari Hospital project should therefore not be viewed through the lens of bitterness or disappointment. They reflect the same principle that has defined his political career the belief that truth should never be sacrificed for political convenience. His concern has always been that development must serve the people first.

The NPP cannot afford to enter the 2028 election divided. Every major political party needs all its influential figures pulling in the same direction. Kennedy Agyapong commands a passionate following across the country, particularly among the party’s grassroots. Those supporters are not just loyal to him; they are an important part of the NPP’s electoral strength.

If Kennedy fully throws his weight behind Dr. Bawumia’s campaign, it could help bridge internal divisions, energise the party base, and send a strong message that the NPP is united behind one common goal. Unity has often been the deciding factor in competitive elections.

Kennedy Agyapong also brings qualities that complement Dr. Bawumia’s leadership. While Dr. Bawumia is widely recognised for his policy and economic background, Kennedy connects with many ordinary Ghanaians through his direct communication, business experience, and willingness to confront difficult issues. Together, they offer a combination of policy expertise and grassroots appeal that could strengthen the party’s campaign.

The 2028 election will not simply be about choosing a presidential candidate. It will be about convincing Ghanaians that the NPP has learned from its past, has reunited, and is ready to govern with humility, accountability, and a renewed commitment to national development.

Kennedy Agyapong has already shown that he is willing to speak uncomfortable truths. That same courage can now be channelled into helping unite the party behind Dr. Bawumia. His influence, energy, and ability to mobilise supporters could become one of the NPP’s greatest assets.

The question is no longer who should lead the NPP. That decision has been made. The real question is how the party can put its strongest team on the field.

For many supporters, the answer is simple: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia may be the man leading the ticket, but Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is one of the key figures who can help carry the NPP back to power in 2028.
