The Ghana Army has launched a three-week military exercise in Nkwanta in the Oti Region as part of efforts to strengthen peace, enhance operational readiness and improve the military’s response to emerging security threats, including violent extremism, terrorism and internal security challenges.
The activity “EXERCISE STARLIGHT STRETCH II,” officially commenced on Monday, July 6, marking the start of the second phase of the Army’s 2026/2027 Training Year.
The Exercise which forms part of the Ghana Army’s continuous efforts to build a well-trained, disciplined and mission-ready force capable of responding to Ghana’s evolving security environment while strengthening inter-agency collaboration in support of national peace and security, will be conducted simultaneously in Nkwanta and Bawku, bringing together personnel from various units of the Ghana Army to improve interoperability and coordination with other security agencies.

Commanding Officer of the 3 Infantry Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Naah, said the exercise is designed to consolidate gains made during the first phase while further enhancing the operational readiness of troops.
“EXERCISE STARLIGHT STRETCH II is intended to consolidate the gains made during EXERCISE STARLIGHT STRETCH I while further enhancing the operational readiness of personnel,” Lt Col Naah stated.
He said the current security landscape demands a highly prepared and adaptable force capable of responding effectively to evolving threats.

“Emerging threats such as violent extremism, terrorism and other internal security challenges require personnel to remain adaptive, professional and prepared to operate jointly with other security agencies and relevant civil authorities,” he said.
According to him, the training will sharpen the capabilities of troops in both conventional warfare and internal security and counter-insurgency operations while strengthening collaboration among the security services to safeguard lives and property.
Lt Col Naah urged participating personnel to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and discipline throughout the exercise.
“Safety remains paramount. All personnel must strictly adhere to exercise directives, safety regulations and administrative instructions throughout the training,” he stressed.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Nkwanta South, Joseph Awal Antwi, welcomed the troops and expressed confidence in the Ghana Army’s ability to help sustain peace and stability in the municipality.
“We are confident in the Ghana Army’s ability to restore and maintain peace in this area. We welcome the troops to Nkwanta and assure them of the Municipal Assembly’s full support throughout the exercise,” he said.
