Police in the Ashanti Region are investigating an incident in which a police officer was seen brandishing a gun in public.
The officer, captured in a viral video, was seen pulling out his service rifle during a dispute with personnel from Day and Night Towing Services, a private entity contracted by the authorities to enforce parking regulations in the Kumasi Central Business District.
The heated verbal exchange began when the personnel found a saloon car parked in an unauthorised area at Roman Hill within the Central Business District.
After clamping the vehicle and initiating the process to tow it, the police officer, identified as Y.E. Aboagye, emerged claiming ownership of the vehicle.
The officer questioned their decision to tow the vehicle, leading to the verbal exchange.
During the altercation, the officer allegedly threatened to shoot the personnel of the towing company if they attempted to move the vehicle.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, while condemning the incident, urged the Police to investigate the matter swiftly.
Speaking to the media, Henrietta Afia Konadu, the Public Relations Officer of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, said investigations into the incident were underway.
She explained that the personnel involved were not part of the KMA security task force but belonged to an outsourced company, Day and Night Towing Services, which had been contracted by the Assembly to tow vehicles parked at unauthorised locations.
According to her, the police officer whose vehicle was towed engaged the company’s personnel in an argument and subsequently pulled out a gun.
“Investigations are underway. The personnel are not the security task force of KMA; this is an outsourced company called Day and Night, mandated by the Assembly to tow cars parked at unauthorised locations. The police officer whose car was towed engaged the outsourced company personnel and pulled a gun,” she said.
