Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has attributed Ghana’s improved macroeconomic indicators to what he described as disciplined and prudent management of the economy.
He made the remarks while presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23.
According to Dr Ato Forson, the progress recorded in areas such as inflation, exchange rate stability and other key economic indicators was not accidental but the outcome of deliberate policy decisions and stronger fiscal management.
He said the current economic recovery reflects a shift from the economic conditions inherited by the John Dramani Mahama-led administration, which he described as a period of severe instability.
“The progress Ghana is recording today did not happen by chance. It is superior economic management. Every macroeconomic indicator has improved,” he told Parliament.
Dr Ato Forson said the previous economic challenges were driven by what he described as poor policy choices, excessive borrowing, uncontrolled spending and weak accountability.
“President Mahama inherited an economy on its knees. The 2022 economic crisis was not merely an accident but the result of poor policy choices, reckless spending, excessive borrowing, and lack of accountability,” he added.
He said the crisis had contributed to significant cedi depreciation, high inflation, elevated interest rates and Ghana’s loss of access to the international capital market.
The Finance Minister cautioned against a return to the economic conditions that led to instability, stressing the need for continued discipline and sound policy implementation to protect the gains made.
He said sustaining the current improvements would require maintaining prudent fiscal management, strengthening institutions and ensuring that economic policies support long-term growth.
Dr Ato Forson reiterated that the government’s approach had helped restore confidence in the economy and improve key indicators, adding that the focus now is to consolidate the gains and build a more resilient economy.
