President John Dramani Mahama says his administration will continue to take decisions that prioritise the welfare of Ghanaians and protect the country’s democratic gains as part of efforts to honour the legacy of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
President Mahama said his close working relationship with Professor Mills during his time as Vice President continues to shape his approach to leadership, particularly the values of integrity, unity and service to the people.
He made the remarks at a wreath-laying ceremony at Asomdwee Park in Accra to mark the 14th anniversary of the passing of President Mills.
Reflecting on the late President’s leadership style, President Mahama said the values he learned from Professor Mills continue to guide his decisions as Head of State.
“As I reflect on the responsibilities that the people of Ghana have entrusted on me today, I often recall his quiet wisdom and steady temperament. These values continue to remind me that every decision that I take must ultimately serve the people of Ghana and strengthen the democratic institutions that would outlive us all,” he said.
President Mahama said the best way to honour the memory of the late President is not through annual commemorations alone, but by upholding the principles he stood for. He highlighted integrity in public life, respect for democratic institutions, tolerance for divergent views, compassion for vulnerable groups, and ensuring that national development benefits all citizens as key values associated with Professor Mills.
The President acknowledged that Professor Mills’ vision of a peaceful, just and prosperous Ghana remains an ongoing responsibility, pledging to continue along the path of leadership and service established by his predecessor.
“His dream of a peaceful, just and prosperous Ghana remains a work in progress. And I pledge to the memory of Professor Mills, that I shall continue to walk in the footsteps that he left,” he added.
