Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has appealed for patience following Ghana’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the national team needs time to adapt to the philosophy of head coach Carlos Queiroz.
Speaking after Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to Colombia, which ended the Black Stars’ World Cup campaign, Ayew said it was unfair to expect the players to fully embrace a new system after the Portuguese tactician had spent only two months with the team.
“He just came two months ago and tried to install his style, and now people are adjusting. You don’t just adjust within one month or two months. Football doesn’t work like that. You have to accept it.”
Ayew said the changes introduced by Queiroz were already evident in the team’s defensive organisation, although he acknowledged Ghana lacked the attacking edge needed to progress in the tournament.
“We could see that defensively we were better, but then we fell short a bit offensively. So we have to find the right balance.”
The Black Stars captain maintained that the team would only improve if the players are given sufficient time to understand and execute the coach’s ideas.
“And it’s all about work. And the manager needs time. He’s a very good manager. You need to give him time for him to do his job, and hopefully things will be better.”
Ayew’s comments come amid expected scrutiny of the Black Stars’ performance following their Round of 32 elimination. However, the captain believes continuity rather than another change in direction is key, arguing that success cannot be achieved without allowing both the coach and the players adequate time to develop a shared identity.
The defeat to Colombia brought Ghana’s World Cup campaign to an end, with Ayew urging supporters to remain patient as the team continues its transition under Queiroz.
