The race for the Bono Regional Communications Director position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is gaining early momentum, following a strong show of support for former Sunyani East NPP Communications Officer Abubakar Yakubu, popularly known as “Baba Amando,” by grassroots communicators across the region.
A delegation of constituency communications officers, serial callers, and party activists converged at the Bono Regional Elections Committee office in Sunyani to pick nomination forms on his behalf, signalling growing confidence in his leadership ahead of the party’s regional executive elections.
The delegation, drawn from constituencies including Tain, Sunyani East, Sunyani West and others, was led by Tain Constituency Communications Officer Richard Appia-Kubi, who described the move as a deliberate endorsement of Amando’s competence and experience in political communication.
“Baba Amando is a very serious force to reckon with when it comes to communication, business, and grassroots mobilisation in the Bono Region. We believe he has the competence and experience to effectively manage the party’s communications at the regional level,” Appia-Kubi stated.
The nomination forms were officially received from Gabriel Korang, Acting Research and Elections Officer to the Bono Regional Elections Committee, marking a key step in Amando’s bid.
Abubakar Yakubu, affectionately called “Baba Amando,” is seeking to rise from his role as former Sunyani East Constituency Communications Officer to the Bono Regional Communications stage, where he aims to strengthen the party’s messaging and engagement strategy.
Appia-Kubi further noted that Amando’s tenure at the constituency level has equipped him with the administrative and organisational expertise needed to manage the party’s communication machinery effectively.
“His experience in Sunyani East has prepared him adequately. We are calling on delegates to give him the nod because he is the right choice to lead the party’s communications in Bono,” he added.
The NPP is expected to hold its regional executive elections in the coming months as part of a broader reorganisation effort following its defeat in Ghana’s 2024 general election.
The exercise is widely seen as critical to rebuilding party structures and strengthening its electoral strategy ahead of future contests.
On April 17, 2026, the High Court granted bail to Baba Amando after he spent two weeks on remand.
He was granted GH¢30,000 bail with two sureties and ordered to report to the police every two weeks pending investigations.
Baba Amando was arrested on April 13 over allegations of offensive conduct, false publication and circulating statements likely to cause fear and panic. The case is also linked to alleged threats against an Adentan Circuit Court judge and the posting of derogatory images of President John Dramani Mahama and some government officials.
Investigations are ongoing, and no formal charges have yet been filed.
