Cabinet has approved the establishment of Ghana Medical Equipment Services Ltd., a new state-owned company that will operate as a subsidiary of the MahamaCares programme to oversee the use, maintenance and management of medical equipment in health facilities across the country.
The new entity is expected to play a central role in improving the management of medical equipment within Ghana’s healthcare system by ensuring that critical machines are properly maintained, regularly serviced and efficiently utilised.
President John Dramani Mahama announced the Cabinet decision as part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare infrastructure and improve the quality of medical services delivered to Ghanaians.
According to the President, the creation of Ghana Medical Equipment Services Ltd. is intended to address the long-standing challenge of poor maintenance culture in the health sector, which has often resulted in expensive medical equipment becoming non-functional after only a few years of use.
He observed that many hospitals across the country continue to struggle with malfunctioning diagnostic and treatment equipment, forcing patients to seek services elsewhere or endure delays in receiving healthcare.
President Mahama noted that the country can no longer afford the continuous cycle of purchasing costly medical equipment only for the machines to break down prematurely because of inadequate maintenance and poor management practices.
He stressed that the new company will introduce a more structured and coordinated approach to equipment management, ensuring that medical devices remain operational throughout their expected lifespan while delivering value for money to the state.
The President said the recurring breakdown of medical equipment and the continuous replacement of faulty machines are not sustainable.
Once operational, Ghana Medical Equipment Services Ltd. will be responsible for coordinating the installation, routine servicing, preventive maintenance and repair of medical equipment in public health facilities nationwide.
The company is also expected to develop standardised maintenance schedules and establish systems for monitoring the condition and performance of equipment across hospitals and clinics.
