The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced that government will fully reconstruct the Eastern Corridor Road into an asphalt pavement instead of undertaking patch repairs on the existing surface-dressed road, saying the corridor has outlived its design life and requires a more durable solution.
Speaking during an inspection of the 46-kilometre rehabilitation of the Dodo Pepesu–Nkwanta–Dambai Road being executed by Growth 82 Global Limited, the Minister said technical assessments have shown that the road has exceeded its design life after more than a decade without major maintenance.
He explained that, instead of carrying out patchwork repairs or retaining the existing road base, government has opted for a complete reconstruction of the corridor, including the replacement of the road base where necessary, to provide a more durable and long-lasting road network.
The Minister said the decision is intended to improve safety, enhance connectivity along the Eastern Corridor, and reduce the high maintenance costs associated with repeated spot repairs.
“We are changing the road base, applying the prime coat before laying the final asphalt surface. This is not a repair of the existing surface dressing. We do not have enough time, and the contractor must work much quicker than this.”
