Gov’t breaks ground for Suhum 24-Hour Market, commissions schools

The government has broken ground for the construction of the Suhum 24-Hour Economy Model Market in the Eastern Region, marking another step in the rollout of its flagship 24-hour economy programme aimed at expanding commercial activity and supporting local enterprise.

Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, who performed the sod-cutting ceremony, said the market would provide modern trading infrastructure, stimulate economic activity and create employment opportunities in the municipality.

She urged the contractor to execute the project according to approved specifications and within the stipulated timeframe, saying the success of the government’s 24-hour economy agenda depended on the timely completion of key infrastructure projects.

During the visit, the minister also commissioned two educational facilities in the Suhum Municipality—a six-unit classroom block at Adarkwa and a three-unit kindergarten block at Kokooso—to improve access to education in the area.

Awatey said the projects reflected the government’s efforts to expand educational infrastructure and appealed to residents of the beneficiary communities to maintain the facilities to ensure they serve future generations.

Suhum Municipal Chief Executive Lydia Ohenewaa Sarah described the classroom projects as a boost to educational infrastructure, saying the schools would serve several communities and improve access to quality learning.

The Suhum Municipal Director of Education, Mrs. Osei Bonsu, thanked the government and other stakeholders for supporting the projects and urged residents to safeguard the facilities.

Addressing residents, Awatey also appealed to Ghanaians to renew the mandate of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2028 general election, saying the government had additional development initiatives it intends to implement.

She said the government was implementing projects across multiple sectors and expressed confidence that continued investment in infrastructure, education and economic development would improve livelihoods if given another term in office.
