Seasoned legal practitioner, corporate governance expert, and international arbitration specialist Naa Amerley Bortei-Doku has been sworn in as a Notary Public of the Supreme Court of Ghana, joining a select group of legal practitioners authorised to perform official notarial acts recognised in Ghana and internationally.
Her appointment, made under the Notaries Public Act, 1960 (Act No. 26), marks another significant milestone in her distinguished legal career, which spans more than 18 years.
Under the Act, only lawyers of proven integrity and high moral character who have practised for at least ten years are eligible for appointment as Notaries Public.
As a Notary Public, Ms. Bortei-Doku is authorised to witness the execution of legal documents, administer oaths and statutory declarations, certify affidavits and powers of attorney, and authenticate documents for use in both domestic and international transactions.
Notaries play an important role in preventing fraud and ensuring the authenticity of documents relied upon by courts, governments, financial institutions, and businesses around the world.
Ms. Bortei-Doku is the Co-Managing Solicitor of Amarteifio & Co., one of Ghana’s longstanding law firms with a distinguished commercial and civil litigation practice.
She advises local and international clients on corporate and commercial law, mergers and acquisitions, governance, dispute resolution, and international arbitration. Under her leadership, the firm has continued to expand its commercial practice while maintaining its longstanding reputation for excellence in civil litigation.
Called to the Ghana Bar in 2009, Ms. Bortei-Doku is also admitted to practise before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Bar and the New Jersey Supreme Court Bar in the United States. She is an Arbitration Associate with the Centre for International Mediators and Arbitrators, England and Wales (ACIMArb), and a member of the London Court of International Arbitration African Users Council, reflecting her experience in cross-border legal practice and international dispute resolution.
Ms. Bortei-Doku graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in History from Temple University. As part of her undergraduate studies, she undertook a Study Abroad Programme in History and Literature at the University of Cambridge.
She later earned a Juris Doctor from Temple University Beasley School of Law, where she received recognition for Outstanding Oral Advocacy and Distinguished Class Performance in Trial Advocacy, before completing her professional legal education at the University of Ghana School of Law.
Over the course of her career, Ms. Bortei-Doku has advised clients across the pharmaceutical, infrastructure, agriculture, and financial services sectors.
Her notable engagements include acting on a GH¢100 million corporate merger and related litigation, advising on the financing of a Government of Ghana housing development project, and serving as legal counsel to one of Ghana’s leading agribusinesses.
Beyond private practice, Ms. Bortei-Doku has served on the boards of several organisations, providing expertise in corporate governance, legal risk management, and regulatory compliance. She currently serves as Board Secretary and Non-Executive Director of Kudi Systems Ltd, where she contributes to the company’s governance and regulatory oversight.
Her appointment as a Notary Public further expands her professional responsibilities and reinforces her standing within Ghana’s legal profession. It also enhances the availability of trusted notarial services for businesses, institutions, and the public, particularly in an increasingly global environment where the authentication of legal documents is essential for international commerce and cross-border legal transactions.
