The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has called for a major review of Ghana’s medical education system to make training opportunities more accessible to a larger number of students, following government’s reforms that have opened up access to legal education.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series, Mr. Iddrisu noted the reforms introduced under the Legal Education Act, 2026, provide a model that could be replicated in other professional fields, particularly medical training.
The Legal Education Act, 2026, introduces measures aimed at expanding opportunities for prospective lawyers, including the abolition of the Ghana School of Law entrance examination, which had previously served as a major barrier for many applicants seeking professional legal training.
The reforms also expanded the role of accredited universities in providing professional legal education, allowing more qualified students to pursue legal training beyond the traditional pathway.
Addressing the press at the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 20, the Education Minister opined that the changes have helped to “demystify” legal education in Ghana and should inspire similar efforts in medical education.
“It will be to President Mahama’s legacy that we have demystified legal education in Ghana. Very soon there will be lawyers all over the country thanks to our revised policy,” he said.
He noted that increasing access to professional education like medicine is necessary to create more opportunities for young Ghanaians and strengthen the country’s human resource base.
“It is my desire that we do the same for medical education so that medical education is increasingly made available to many more Ghanaian students. So the same revolution accompanying legal education will soon be ignited in the area of medical education,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.
